中国精神——五四精神

On April 30， 2019， General Secretary Xi Jinping

在纪念五四运动100周年大会上发表讲话指出，

pointed out in a speech at the ceremony to mark the centenary of the May Fourth Movement that

新时代中国青年处在中华民族发展的最好时期，

the young Chinese people in the new era live in the best time for China to develop，

既面临着难得的建功立业的人生际遇，

therefore the youth in China are not only facing rare opportunities of making achievements in their lives，

也面临着“天将降大任于斯人”的时代使命。

but also encountering the time＇s call that the fate is about to grant the man major responsibility．

新时代中国青年要继续发扬五四精神，

Young Chinese people in the new era should continue to carry forward the legacy of the May Fourth Movement

以实现中华民族伟大复兴为己任，

and shoulder the responsibility of realizing the rejuvenation of Chinese nation，

不辜负党的期望、人民期待、民族重托，

so that they will not let down the Party， not disappoint the people or not betray the great trust of the nation，

不辜负我们这个伟大时代。

and make the best out of this great time．

1919年，北平爱国学生在民族存亡的危难时刻，毅然举起爱国主义的旗帜，

In 1919， patriotic students in Peiping resolutely raised the flag of patriotism at the critical moment of national survival

树立了青春的标杆，

and set up a good example of youth，

孕育了以爱国、进步、民主、科学为主要内容的伟大五四精神。

giving birth to the great spirit of the May Fourth Movement featuring patriotism， progress， democracy and science．

五四运动唤起了民族的觉醒，

The May Fourth Movement is an enlightenment for the entire nation

从五四运动出发，

and a starting point for Chinese people

中国人自主探索寻路，

to explore and find their own way independently．

从黑夜沉沉中找到了光亮、走向了光明，

Groping for light in darkness and progressing towards a brilliant future，

日益走近实现中华民族伟大复兴的目标。

China is getting closer to making the goal of national rejuvenation a reality．

回忆过往，

Recalling the eventful years，

峥嵘岁月留下无数光辉青年的名字：方志敏、赵一曼、杨靖宇……

countless outstanding young people， such as Fang Zhimin， Zhao Yiman， Yang Jingyu and so on

这些优秀的中华儿女用鲜血和生命

devoted their blood and lives to the country，

托起新中国的旭日。

so that China， like a rising sun， stood up．

环顾当今，继往开来涌现出无数榜样：

Nowadays， numerous role models continuously emerge：

26岁就扎根在开山岛的王继才、

Wang Jicai， who served on Kaishan island， a border island since 26；

31岁转业后主动要求到湖北最偏远的来凤县工作的张富清、

Zhang Fuqing， who volunteered to work in Laifeng， the most remote county in Hubei Province， when demobilized at the age of 31；

38岁担任中国第一颗人造地球卫星总体设计负责人的孙家栋……

Sun Jiadong， who took charge of the overall design of China＇s first man－made earth satellite at 38 years old…

他们是当代青年们的榜样，

They are role models for contemporary young people

生动诠释了五四精神的含义。

and vivid interpretation of the spirit of the May Fourth Movement．

历史长河浩荡向前，

Human history， like a river， runs forever，

精神之火生生不息。

witnessing imperishable spirit flame．

每个青年都应该珍惜这个伟大时代，

Every young person should cherish this great era，

扎根人民，奉献国家，

stay in touch with the people， contribute to the country

做新时代的奋斗者、五四精神的传承者。

to strive in the new era and inherit the spirit of the May Fourth Movement．

树立远大理想，热爱伟大祖国，

With noble ideals and patriotism，

担当时代责任，

young people shoulder the responsibility of the era

勇于砥砺奋斗，练就过硬本领，锤炼品德修为，

and work hard for excellent abilities and good moral character

不断谱写无愧于前辈、无愧于时代、无愧于人民的壮丽篇章。
