Transmitting Our Cultural Heritage, Safeguarding Our Natural Environment
13 June is the 2020 China Cultural and Natural Heritage Day. Under the theme of “ICH Transmission for Healthier Lives”, the Ministry of Cultural and Tourism launched the “Wandering Through ICH” online promotion campaign. As a highlight of this year’s celebration, over 70% of the 3700 intangible cultural heritage (ICH)-related activities and event will be held online, and will place high emphasis on the youth population and diversity in ways of participation. The main event -- “Wandering Through ICH: A Journey Through Pictures and Films” joins 8 major online video platforms to screen over 1000 documentaries and films on ICH safeguarding and transmission. To encourage the inclusion of ICH in people’s daily lives, 20 provinces will launch “ICH Shopping Festival” on 6 major online shopping platforms, and 12 provinces will organize corresponding shopping events at historic towns and scenic areas.
ICH not only bears the cultural identity and values of people and communities, it also has great potential in facilitating the achievement of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Since 2017, UNESCO Beijing Office - China Youth Development Foundation Mercedes-Benz Star Fund has been implementing the World Heritage Sustainable Livelihood pilot activity, realizing the great potential of culture in alleviating poverty, promoting gender equality, enhancing resilience of World Heritage sites, and contributing to sustainable development of the local communities. In alignment with the work of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, UNESCO Beijing Cluster Office established collaboration with the Ministry on ICH for poverty alleviation, promotion of China’s experience on rural revitalization, and sustainable development of communities at World Heritage sites.
In this year’s celebration, UNESCO Beijing’s World Heritage Sustainable Livelihood pilot activity will contribute to the Weibo campaign #ICH by Your Side#. Five ICH transmitters and community leaders from the four sustainable livelihood pilot sites (Shilin of South China Karst, Chishui of China Danxia, Wolong of Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, Songtao from Fanjingshan) will become “Partners of ICH”, and share with you their ICH stories.
