the year 2021 is drawing to a close and I wanted to take this opportunity to send you a brief message
2021年已经接近尾声，我想借此机会和你们说几句话
here from the home of the United Nations on a cold winter's day
今天天气非常寒冷，我现在正在联合国总部
and also the home of the United Nations Development Program.
和联合国开发计划署的总部，向你们致以最诚挚的祝福
It's been a tough year and for many of you, every day continues to be a challenge
对于很多人来说，今年可能是非常艰难的一年，每一天都面临挑战
whether it is in the context of our families worried about the health of our parents
有些人担心自己的家人、父母的健康
worried about the education of our children
有些人担心孩子的教育
worried about our neighbors, worried about ourselves
也有些人担心邻里，当然大家也会担心自身
It's a profound period of insecurity and uncertainty and let us also be honest
这段时间充斥着不安全和不确定，但坦诚来讲
it is a period in which we have seen some of the most brave, extraordinary and moving acts
也正是在这段时间里，我们见证了最勇敢，最不平凡，也最让人感动的事迹
by people working in solidarity with their neighbors in their jobs to save lives
无论是生活中还是工作中，大家都团结在一起，共同拯救生命
and we have seen some of the most profound failures in societies and yes in our global community
与此同时，我们也目睹了周遭和更远的国际社会面临的坎坷
Vaccine inequity at the end of 2021 remains a defining characteristic of this pandemic
直至2021年末，疫苗公平问题仍是全球疫情面临的巨大挑战
One that will continue to haunt us not only in terms of the health crisis
这一问题不仅会持续深刻影响全球卫生危机
but also in terms of the memories of those who to this day have not had access to vaccine
同时也一直深刻影响着那些至今无法接种疫苗的群体
and let me also take this opportunity to express my condolences to those of you who have lost family members, friends and colleagues
我想借此机会向那些失去了家人、朋友和同事的人们表示哀悼
These are profoundly sad moments and in some respects perhaps by now they could have become avoidable
这是至暗的时刻，从某些方面来讲，这也并非完全无法避免
But we have to look forward and we are privileged as staff of the United Nations Development Program
但是我们要向前看，我们非常荣幸能够成为联合国开发计划署的一员
as United Nations volunteers, as staff members of the UN Capital Development Fund
同时也是联合国志愿人员组织、联合国资本发展基金
MPTF and the UN Office for South-South Cooperation

All of you who make up the UNDP family are in a position to make a difference
所有联合国大家庭的成员都有能力做出改变
So in reflecting on the year 2021
回望2021
I first of all want to commend all of you for your extraordinary commitment
首先，我想感谢你们所有人的全情付出
and also to many amongst us for your courage to continue to serve where others did not feel able to serve
感谢你们勇敢无畏，在他人以为艰险的地方不断奋斗
I'm thinking here in particular of those on the front lines of our health services
在此，我想特别感谢我们服务于卫生健康一线的同事们
but also in countries of crisis and conflict where so many of our colleagues have stayed and delivered
以及那些工作在地方冲突和危机一线的同事们
This is the commitment of the United Nations
这是联合国的责任
It's the commitment of the Secretary General that he repeats regularly
这是秘书长先生反复提到的责任
in order to both give us the confidence and the courage to continue to be there alongside the people

that we join the United Nations for to serve
这也是我们加入联合国的初心
But in looking forward to the year 2022

Let us also be honest, we are not out of this crisis, this pandemic is not behind us
坦诚来讲，我们还没有走出危机，此次疫情尚未结束
Therefore, we need to find both inner strength and conviction to return in the new year
因此，我们需要带着自身内生动力和信念迈入新的一年
with the same determination hopefully greater clarity and also greater solidarity at the global level
以同样坚定的决心，更清晰、更团结地开展全球合作
both to contain this pandemic but also to return to a moment where thinking about the future
遏制疫情，守望未来
The future of development is something that gives us hope
未来发展总能带给我们希望
young people today in particular
今天的年轻一代尤为如此
I have a great deal of sympathy for what kind of perspective is it to live in a world
我非常赞同一个观点，无论我们的处事方法如何
that cannot deal with a pandemic in an equitable way where vaccines become an issue of privilege and access
如果连疫苗公平都难以实现的话，何谈公平有效应对整个疫情
but also the capacity of us to act together on a challenge like climate change that will define the lives and livelihoods
同样，如果我们不团结起来，就很难应对像气候变化这样会深刻影响我们生产生活的挑战
indeed of billions of people already in the next couple of generations and perhaps for centuries to come
这将影响到下一代，甚至是接下来几个世纪的几十亿人的生活
It is a world in which inertia and sometimes denial are still too prevalent

But this is also our opportunity as staff members of the UN, as staff of the United Nations Development Program

we have an opportunity to work in countries on the ground to bring science, knowledge, technology and opportunity
我们仍然有机会用切实工作将科学、知识、技术和发展机遇
closer to those who can turn them into development pathways and choices for the future
带给各国人民，让他们可以思考未来发展道路并作出选择
This has to be our focus even in these difficult times
尽管是在如此艰难的时刻，这仍然是我们的坚守
From that perspective, I simply want to ask you to in a sense take a moment as this year ends to be with family and friends

to reflect and to recover, regain your strength and also your courage and then to return in the year 2022

Let us make a difference

This is what we set out to do our new strategic plan in UNDP

It is also an opportunity to demonstrate that

what we do and what we're committed to doing is part of the future story of development
