恭王府概况

Introduction to Prince Kung’s Mansion

恭王府位于北京市西城区前海西街。乾隆四十五年（1780年），大学士和珅奉旨建此府，咸丰元年（1851年）清廷赐封此宅邸于恭亲王爱新觉罗·奕訢，恭王府的名称也因此得来。 

恭王府是清代规模最大的一座王府建筑群，历经了清王朝由鼎盛而至衰亡的历史进程，故有了“一座恭王府，半部清代史”的说法。

Prince Kung’s Mansion is located in Qianhai West Street, Xicheng District, Beijing. In 1780, the 45th year during Emperor Qianlong’s reign of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Grand Secretary He Shen built the mansion upon the imperial decree. In 1851, the first year of Emperor Xianfeng’s reign, the mansion was conferred on Prince Kung or Yixin Aisin Gioro, hence its name. 

Prince Kung’s Mansion is the largest building complex of its kind in the Qing Dynasty. It witnessed the history of the Qing Empire from heydays to collapse. Therefore, a saying goes that “Prince Kung’s Mansion bears half of the history of the Qing Dynasty.”

海棠花是我国十大名花

素有“花中神仙”、“花贵妃”的美誉

海棠花一般在四到五月开放

通常为粉红色、红褐色、紫红色和白色等

观赏价值很高

是雅俗共赏的名花

Chinese crabapple is one of the 10 most famous flowering plants in China. 

It enjoys the reputations of “Fairy of Flowers” and“Imperial Concubine of Flowers”. 

It usually blooms from April to May, 

with pink, brown-red, purple-red or white flowers. 

Due to its high ornamental value, 

the flowering plant is admired by scholars and laymen alike.

海棠花种类繁多

其中最有名的要数

被誉为“海棠四品”的西府海棠、垂丝海棠、贴梗海棠和木瓜海棠

There are many species of Chinese crabapple,

of which the four most famous are 

midget crabapple, hall crabapple, flowering quince, and Chinese quince.

The snow-white crabapple blossoms are so attractive that a path is formed below the trees.

When spring breeze blows, 

crabapple petals fall like rain, 

creating an intoxicating view.

恭王府内有一小殿叫做“澄怀撷秀”

堂前植有数株海棠，曾经名冠京城

“花月玲珑”即指这里海棠花盛开时的景色

当时的人们习惯地把阿拉善王府称为东府

把恭王府称为西府

“西府海棠”因此得名

这一处故称之为“海棠轩”

An exquisite hall in Prince Kung’s Mansion is called Chenghuaixiexiu 

(literally “Quintessence in Pure Mind”)

In front of the hall are several crabapple trees that enjoy fame around Beijing.

“Blossoms in Dim Moonlight” refers to the scene of crabapple flowers in full bloom here. 

Back then, people habitually calledPrince Alashan’s Mansion as “East Mansion”

and Prince Kung’s Mansion as “West Mansion”.

Hence, the midget crabapple is called “Xifu Haitang”

(literally, “Crabapple in West Mansion”). 

The hall is thus nicknamed “Crabapple Pavilion”.

恭王府有小故宫之称

古往今来无数文人雅士在这里雅集交游

每到海棠花盛开的时节

恭王府都会聚集一大批当代文人到此吟诗作赋

将春花诗意凝结在海棠里

称之为“海棠雅集”

成为了中国现代文化史中的一处缩影

Prince Kung’s Mansion is nicknamed the “Lesser Imperial Palace”. 

Since ancient times, countless men of letter liked to gather and meet here. 

Especially in the flowering season of crabapple trees, 

a number of contemporary scholars gathered in Prince Kung’s Mansionto compose poems

to eulogize spring and crabapple blossoms,

which was known as Crabapple Poetry Gathering.

It epitomizes an episode of the cultural history of modern time.
