BRICS

Hi! Welcome to “About China”!

In today’s program, we will talk about ”BRICS”.

The word BRICS is an acronym that is now in common usage and its 9th summit will be held on Sept 3-5 in Xiamen, Fujian province.

The term “BRIC” was first coined in November 2011 by then chief economist of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Jim O’Neill, in his publication Building Better Global Economic BRICs.

As the representative and bellwethers of emerging economies and developing countries, Brazil, Russia, India and China, have been in the global spotlight. The BRIC concept became an international phenomenon.

In December, 2010, China, then holder of the BRIC rotating presidency, agreed with Russia, India and Brazil, to accept South Africa as an official member. BRIC officially enlarged to include 5 countries and the acronym changed to BRICS. Since then the BRICS countries have held a leaders’meeting every year.
