New Year’s Eve
Hi! Welcome to “About China”! In today’s program, we will talk about “New Year’s Eve”.
New Year’s Eve is one of the most important traditional festivals in China; it refers to the night of the last day of lunar year, the night before the Spring Festival. It is a festival of ringing out the Old Year and ringing in the New Year, and everything is fresh again. Along with Tomb Sweeping Day, Hungry Ghost Festival and the Double Ninth Festival, it is a traditional festival for ancestor worship in China as well as a traditional cultural festival popular in the cultural circle of Chinese characters.
People stay up late or all night on New Year’s Eve, just as a poem “children struggle not to go to sleep, with laughter and noise in the night ” written by Su Shi, litterateur in Tang Dynasty. Moreover, people will clean the room, paste Door-god, paste the Spring Festival couplets, paste New Year pictures, hang out lanterns and people will wear new clothes with festive colors.
New Year's Eve is of special significance in the hearts of Chinese people. No matter how far one is away from home, he or she is eager to go home for family reunion. People ring out the Old Year and ring in the New Year with firecrackers and fireworks blooming in the sky.
